The Indian Institute of Toxicology Research (IITR), established in 1976, is a leading autonomous research institution under the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), Government of India. Located in the historic city of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, we specialize in cutting-edge toxicology and environmental health research.
Our mission is to generate scientific knowledge and technologies for the assessment and management of toxicological risks to human health and the environment. With state-of-the-art laboratories and a team of over 200 scientists, we conduct multidisciplinary research spanning chemical safety, nanotoxicology, environmental contaminants, risk assessment, and regulatory toxicology.
IITR is recognized globally for its contributions to public health policy and environmental protection. We collaborate with international agencies, academic institutions, and industries to address emerging challenges such as air and water pollution, pesticide residues, heavy metals, and occupational hazards.
Explore Our ResearchVision: To be a world-class institute in toxicological sciences, providing leadership in research, education, and policy support for a sustainable and healthy society.
Mission: To conduct innovative research in toxicology and environmental health, develop skilled human resources, and offer expert services for risk assessment and management.
Institute founded as Industrial Toxicology Research Centre (ITRC).
Renamed as Indian Institute of Toxicology Research (IITR).
Accredited as a WHO Collaborating Centre for Environmental Health.
Launched National Facility for Risk Assessment Studies.
Comprehensive studies on the adverse effects of industrial chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and consumer products on biological systems. We evaluate toxicity mechanisms, dose-response relationships, and develop safety guidelines for regulatory compliance.
Learn MoreInvestigating the impact of environmental pollutants (air, water, soil) on human health. Our research includes biomonitoring, exposure assessment, and epidemiological studies to mitigate risks from heavy metals, pesticides, and emerging contaminants.
Learn MorePioneering safety assessment of engineered nanomaterials. We analyze interactions at the nano-bio interface, potential genotoxicity, and long-term environmental fate to support sustainable nanotechnology development.
Learn MoreIntegrating toxicological data with computational models to predict health risks. We provide scientific basis for regulatory decisions, setting exposure limits, and developing risk management strategies for chemicals and environmental stressors.
Learn MoreOur research is supported by advanced facilities including high-throughput screening labs, genomic and proteomic platforms, animal housing (AAALAC accredited), and bioinformatics resources. We publish over 150 peer-reviewed papers annually and hold numerous patents for innovative technologies.
We offer a full spectrum of toxicological testing services compliant with OECD, EPA, and ICMR guidelines. Services include acute and chronic toxicity studies, genotoxicity assays (Ames test, micronucleus), carcinogenicity testing, and reproductive toxicity evaluations. Our GLP-certified laboratories ensure reliable data for regulatory submissions.
Comprehensive analysis of environmental samples for pollutants using advanced instrumentation (GC-MS, LC-MS, ICP-MS). We monitor air quality, water contaminants, soil residues, and food samples for pesticides, heavy metals, persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and microplastics. Our team provides customized monitoring programs and data interpretation.
We provide expert consultancy to government agencies, industries, and NGOs on chemical safety, risk management, and regulatory compliance. Our training programs build capacity in toxicology, laboratory techniques, and risk assessment for professionals and students. Customized workshops and online courses are available.
Our services are accredited by NABL (ISO/IEC 17025), GLP compliance by NIPER, and recognized by regulatory bodies such as the Central Insecticides Board, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), and Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
Our researchers consistently contribute to high-impact scientific journals. Below is a selection of recent publications highlighting our work.
