About IITR

The Indian Institute of Toxicology Research (IITR), established in 1976, is a leading autonomous research institution under the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), Government of India. Located in the historic city of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, we specialize in cutting-edge toxicology and environmental health research.

Our mission is to generate scientific knowledge and technologies for the assessment and management of toxicological risks to human health and the environment. With state-of-the-art laboratories and a team of over 200 scientists, we conduct multidisciplinary research spanning chemical safety, nanotoxicology, environmental contaminants, risk assessment, and regulatory toxicology.

IITR is recognized globally for its contributions to public health policy and environmental protection. We collaborate with international agencies, academic institutions, and industries to address emerging challenges such as air and water pollution, pesticide residues, heavy metals, and occupational hazards.

Our Vision & Mission

Vision: To be a world-class institute in toxicological sciences, providing leadership in research, education, and policy support for a sustainable and healthy society.

Mission: To conduct innovative research in toxicology and environmental health, develop skilled human resources, and offer expert services for risk assessment and management.

Key Milestones

1976

Institute founded as Industrial Toxicology Research Centre (ITRC).

1995

Renamed as Indian Institute of Toxicology Research (IITR).

2010

Accredited as a WHO Collaborating Centre for Environmental Health.

2020

Launched National Facility for Risk Assessment Studies.

Our Research Focus

Chemical Toxicology

Comprehensive studies on the adverse effects of industrial chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and consumer products on biological systems. We evaluate toxicity mechanisms, dose-response relationships, and develop safety guidelines for regulatory compliance.

Learn More

Environmental Health

Investigating the impact of environmental pollutants (air, water, soil) on human health. Our research includes biomonitoring, exposure assessment, and epidemiological studies to mitigate risks from heavy metals, pesticides, and emerging contaminants.

Learn More

Nanotoxicology

Pioneering safety assessment of engineered nanomaterials. We analyze interactions at the nano-bio interface, potential genotoxicity, and long-term environmental fate to support sustainable nanotechnology development.

Learn More

Risk Assessment

Integrating toxicological data with computational models to predict health risks. We provide scientific basis for regulatory decisions, setting exposure limits, and developing risk management strategies for chemicals and environmental stressors.

Learn More

Our research is supported by advanced facilities including high-throughput screening labs, genomic and proteomic platforms, animal housing (AAALAC accredited), and bioinformatics resources. We publish over 150 peer-reviewed papers annually and hold numerous patents for innovative technologies.
